Rare bottle of 1966 Bin 72 Penfolds Grange Hermitage
This is a rare bottle of 1966 Bin 72 Penfolds Grange Hermitage, understood to have been created for tradeshows at the time and featured in Wickman's April 2023 Auction.

The year 1966 marked a growth period in Australian wine history, witnessing rapid expansion in the industry, new vineyards being planted, and the establishment of several new wineries. Amidst this transformative era, two outstanding wines emerged from Penfolds, the Grange Hermitage and Bin 620.

1966 Grange Hermitage

The 1966 Grange Hermitage is a remarkable wine that has garnered significant attention for its unique qualities. Bottles were labelled Bin numbers 71, 72 and 95. Composed of 88% Shiraz and 12% Cabernet Sauvignon, the wine originates from various regions in South Australia, including Kalimna (Barossa Valley), Barossa Valley, Magill, and Morphett Vale.

Over the years, the 1966 Grange Hermitage has received numerous awards and distinctions, such as four gold medals and five other accolades in Australian wine shows between 1969 and 1980. With its complex and opulent flavor profile, the wine continues to captivate collectors and enthusiasts alike.

Tasting notes describe the 1966 Grange Hermitage as having sweet and rich flavors, with gamey and chocolate notes, as well as some truffle undertones. The wine's medium-deep brick crimson color and intense red currant, walnut, polished mahogany, and leather aromas, along with its liquorice notes, contribute to its allure. At the time of writing, there have been reports of bottles starting to fade, however, well stored bottles of good provenance will always decrease that risk and make this a rare and sought-after wine.

1966 Bin 620 Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz

In the same year, Penfolds crafted another exceptional wine - the 1966 Bin 620 Cabernet Sauvignon Shiraz. As famous in its day as the 1962 Bin 60A, it was considered a classical Claret-style wine, showcasing the potential of Coonawarra during the 1960s and sparking a land rush for the region's terra rossa soils. This blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz inspired later wines such as the 1982 Bin 820, 1990 Bin 920, and 2008 Bin 620 Coonawarra Cabernet Shiraz. Although now past its best, the 1966 Bin 620 remains a significant milestone in Penfolds' winemaking legacy.

Today, these rare gems of 1966 are not only a testament to Penfolds' unparalleled winemaking expertise but also a celebration of a pivotal year in Australian wine history. As collectors and connoisseurs continue to seek out these exceptional wines, they serve as a reminder of the rich heritage and remarkable achievements of the Australian wine industry during this transformative era.
